| The first picture |
| |
During one of our recent whitewater rafting
trips in upper Wisconsin during the summer of 2002, we stopped for gas in
Athelstane. Right across the street was a small Post Office that was
no larger than my garage. We thought it would be nice to take a
picture out front to compare it to the Post Office's of our home towns
which are much larger. During our commute, we came across Pembine's
small Post Office on the side of the road, so we decided to take another
picture. |

We thought it would be nice to collect some
souvenirs of the places that we have been to during our outdoor
adventures. A lot of people who travel collect a shot glass or
postcard but we wanted something else unique. Having a picture of
every Post Office in the town shows that we have been to that town and
visited the local Post Office. Since every Post Office is unique and
reflects the personality of the local culture, we thought we could put
together a photo album of the places we have been. |
| An interesting project idea |
| |
One night, while sitting at my computer
surfing the internet, I became curious of how many Post Offices there
are in the United States. Several hours later, I found some
governmental websites that had databases of every zip code and Post Office
in the country. When I slipped in the bathroom and hit my head on
the toilet I thought of the idea that it would be nice to create a
database collection of every Post Office in the country. This is
where I am at today. I am still crunching numbers to determine
exactly how many Post Offices there are. Also, just like any other
building in the world, any Post Office can be torn down to build a bigger
and better one. PostalGallery.com will remain the archival site of
Post Office images |
| We need your help |
| |
Obviously, we cannot take all the pictures
ourselves as it will take about 150 years and several gallons of gas.
We are asking everyone to help us in our goal for this project.
